Dalhousie – Mt Dare

[metaslider id=92]

Mt. Dare, on the western edge of the Witjira National Park, features one of the most remote hotels in Australia, the Mt. Dare Hotel, which used to be run as a cattle station, until the area was turned into the Witjira National Park in 1984.
Mt. Dare is now not only a favorite stopover for adventure travelers crossing the Simpson desert, but also a popular destination in its own right, with a wealth of aboriginal and early settlers history at your fingertips, some of the best people watching (and meeting) in the country, and a multitude of first class wilderness experiences on your doorstep.

The most notable area to visit near Mt. Dare is of course the magnificent Witjira National Park itself, probably famous for the more than 120 natural springs within the Park borders. Your first stop in the National Park would definitely have to be Dalhousie Springs, where you can enjoy a relaxing bath in the warm springs, and watch native wildlife, from dingos to goannas and kangaroos to the beautiful and rare Australian bustard and more. Another favorite in the National Park are the historic Dalhousie Homestead Ruins, where you can “relive” the days of the early European settlers to the region, who earned their very hard living here in Dalhousie as cattle and sheep farmers.

Venturing further west, you get to the main Simpson Desert, one of the largest sand dune deserts in the world. This magnificent stretch of land is Australia as it is probably best known. Red, dusty, harsh, and full of natural beauty and adventure. Bring a swag and a billy can, and spend a night or two sleeping under the stars before heading back to Alice Springs.
