Remote Air Services Subsidy Scheme

Mail Plane

The “Mail Plane”

The Remote Air Services Subsidy (RASS) Scheme is part of the Australian Government’s Regional Aviation Access Programme (RAAP). RASS subsidises a regular weekly air transport service for the carriage of passengers and goods such as, educational materials, medicines, fresh foods and other urgent supplies to communities in remote and isolated areas of Australia.

Due to the distances involved and with road access to many communities often cut for several months during the wet season, a regular air service offers the only reliable means of transport. Mail is carried on these flights under a separate contract with Australia Post.

NTAS is a contracted RASS Air Operator for region 6, 8 and 10. RASS is part of the Regional Aviation Access Program (RAAP) administered by the Australian government.

Through RASS, communities in remote and isolated areas of Australia receive regular air transport services for passengers and goods, such as educational materials, pharmaceuticals, fresh foods, and other urgent necessities. It is only a reliable air service that provides daily access to many communities, given the distances involved and the fact that road access is often affected during the wet season.

In RASS communities, there are typically six to 200 people, and they are typically cattle stations or Indigenous communities. During mustering season and wet season, the population of a typical RASS community may change.

As part of the RASS Scheme, regular air transport services are provided by air operators contracted by the Australian Government in 10 geographical regions. A total of 269 remote communities throughout Queensland, Northern Territory, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania are covered by the RASS scheme.
